Dear folks,

I have a 93 Ranger (2.3L) and am having a very common problem posted in this forum. On the Ranger's 150k birthday, when turning the ignition key, I hear the click in the solenoid (but starter does not function). I replaced the starter 1000 miles ago. I just replaced the solenoid, and I still (often) just get the single click. It will eventually turnover after many turns of of the key. Ok, some facts:

1. new solenoid (and starter)

2. I am sure it is not the new rebuilt starter because I can jump the terminals and it will turnover (this is true for both the old solenoid and new solenoid).

3. The problem "seems" to be more common when the engine is hot (ie, park the truck for a short time after driving, and return to try to start).

4. Battery terminals were cleaned and well connected.

Most people that have responded in this forum to the exact problem have suggested a problem with main battery cables (corrosion, damaged, etc). Before I replace these cables, I would like to know whether this still could be the case for me considering the fact that I can jump the terminals on the solenoid and the starter will turnover with no problem.

So, my question is simple. Assuming my problem is with the battery cables, would it still be possible to start the truck by jumping the terminals (or does the solenoid require more power then would be required by simply jumping terminals)?

Or, if anybody as any other suggestions, I would greatly appreciated it.
