I would get a turbo timer, it will keep your turbo in good shape. Big, small, cheap, or expensive, I still think its a good investment. Plus I like the digital RPM guage on there.

If you are just going to run the waste gate boost, you should be fine without a boost controller, but you are screwed if you want to turn up the boost. I see what you mean about the D series, I assumed that you were making a balls out track car. If all you want is a little extra power, more power to you. What turbo are you planning on? Build on hold until I get a good paying job, either in school or once I get out. At that time a full tear down and complete rebuild should be in order.
