In my 89, I "Ghetto'ed" it up a bit as a precaution(I dont trust old electronics...eventually they stop working)
I went to a salvage yard and picked up an extra dash peace(the black plastic plate the headlight switch comes out of) and drilled a hole in the bottom section of it and put in a blue aircraft switch(I think it looks good)...I tied ran two wires side by side from behind the switch to the passengerside kick pannel and out the same hole for the radio antenna wire, and up to the front right side of my engine compartment.
I spliced one of the wires into the power feed for the fan, and the other into one of the hot wires from the battery(with an inline fuse of course).
It has come in handy on numerous occasions including major traffic and a issue I had where there was a short on my gages fuse so I just flicked the switch on when ever I felt it was necessary. My fan does work by itself, but sometimes I want to be in more direct control.
You should do something like this atleast you find out what is causing the problem, that is if your car is your only form of transportation.
