4 cyl grand am's 92-95 had the 2.3, in 1996 it was changed to a 2.4. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. As for the oil leak, did you replace the gasket on the timing cover? Its a rubber coated gasket, I have seen a few where someone changed the head gasket and didnt' change the timing chain cover gasket because they didn't think they needed to.
