190D reliable?
The 190D was fairly rare and ahead of its time. Its five cylinder diesel gave huge mileage and would last forever if the oil was changed very regularly. Once running correctly, it could be maintained that way easily. There are quite a few in the U.S. still on the road. The body is known for its "built like a tank" quality similar to the 124 and 126 series. The only time this car seems to break on a regular basis is when it is maintained like an ordinary car. Sacrificial parts like brakes should be replaced with mercedes parts as these work best and the rotors don't get scored. O.E. shocks should be replaced with Bilsteins, and front sway bar bushings with Mercedes bushing replacement kit. Transmission fluid and filter should be changed once a year. The rear, upper strut links will have failed by now and should be replaced with the new, updated arms and bolts. Do not use green antifreeze in the radiator! P.
