I never did remove the headliner, there was no reason to. Just remove the the panels between the front and rear seats(where the seatbelt is) , the weather stripping, and the handle above the rear door. You can hold the liner down enough to handle the wire and pass it through the hole. Becareful drilling from the outside in or you may drill into the liner, I did not but I can see it happen if your not used to working a drill.
