Ok 92 sohc motors are well known for head problems, specifically cracking between the coolant passages and the outside of the head. Pouring cold water into a hot motor, doesn't matter if its overheated or not, will cause the head to crack, maybe not the first or second time you do it, but it will crack. A glowing exhaust means either clogged cat or it was running really rich. I'd go with the really rich situation considering you melted the plug boots. It sounds like your water pump has failed, causing a subsequent overheat that went unnoticed, could have been a bad gauge or sending unit, or just one of those flukes. When you put the cold water in, it caused the head to crack, then running the car will cause oil and gas to mix. Probably the easiest fix is to change the motor as you probably have bearing damage or cylinder damage. Hope this helps.
