Rear Park Assist

Newbie here. Hoping somebody can save me a financially painful trip to the dealer...

I have an '01 Park Ave with the Ultrasonic Rear Park Assist. Most of the time it works great... but occasionally it throws hissy fits. While backing up, I will get the red indicator light above the rear window flashing at me (like it does when reversing over 3 mph) the whole time I'm in reverse. What I have noticed is that if I put the car in park, turn it off, start it again and put it in reverse, it will usually work fine. Recently, it did it and turning off/on the car didn't help. Right now, it works fine again.

I have an extended warranty on the car, but the problem is intermittent enough that if it doesn't act up right when they test it, they will call it good and charge me a large sum of money for their time.

Has anyone seen this before?
