Re: 1989 Suburban - restore it or dump it?

I faced the same situation earlier this year with my '90 half-ton tailgate model. I bought it new in April 1990 and had 370.000 original miles.

The new alternatives were $30-$40,000 and only got a couple of mpg more. What I really wanted was a full-size SUV for my business travel with a hybrid powertrain that would deliver perhaps 30 in town and 25 on the highway. But this is several years off, perhaps 2009.

So I got a first-class paint job (no rust in California) and had a 383 stroker motor built for torque and mileage, total investment under $10,000. I figure I'm set for 10 years at 30,000 miles per year.

If I do pick up a hybrid in a few years, I'll keep this old one for towing!
