Just my two cents here... I strongly recommend starting with an AMT or Revell kit. No need to start with a Snap-tite mind you, but a decent skill 2. I gotta say I'm happy that I started with the American kits before trying a Tamiya--the instructions are a little daunting, sometimes custom paint mixing is required, there's tons more parts (unless it's an easy curbside kit) etc... I'd say it's also easier to start spraypainting on larger American cars that have flatter/wider panels, IMO.
