Keep in mind that with "the old small block"--Chevy small block--the dot on the cam gear went to 6:00, the mark on the crank gear went to 12:00 at top dead center, compression, of NUMBER 6 NOT NUMBER 1.

So both sets of directions "could" be correct, because they aren't telling you which cylinder needs to be at TDC Compression (as opposed to TDC Exhaust)
