That sounds like it, but the dealers never agreed with that suggestion when I mentioned it to them.
Last couple summers we noticed the fan 'roaring' during the summer months when first pulling out with cold engine...it actually scared the wife.....as she thought the engine was going to blow up. Back then the dealer said it was normal in the summer as the engine needed extra cooling. He explained that the fan clutch has oil in it...and that when it got hot it spins more?
Another mechanic offered to replace the fan clutch, but we passed on it when we decided to replace the heater core and radiator...etc.
I'll look into the fan clutch scenerio you described. Thanks
