A Cat-back system which replaces all the piping after the Catalitic Converter is the best bet. Companies such as Apexi, Greddy, DC Sport, 5Zigen, Comptech, all make Cat-back systems. These systems have been dyno tested from the manufacturer for best performance. The piping is usually a little larger than stock and the bends are smoother so it's less restrictive. These systems run upwards of $500, but sound and look good.
I don't really know what you mean as far as performance exhaust so explain what you mean a little more.
A universal muffler will NOT add any horsepower what-so-ever, you can have a muffler shop bend piping but it will not be as nice as a Greddy piping system. And the muffler shops don't really care about performance as far as the bends or anything so they will just bend it anyway they can. You might see a little gain in power but nothing major, even the Greddy exhaust only add like 5 hp.
If you want quality and to keep the exhaust for a while get something like a Greddy or a cat-back system. If you want to go cheap then you can get a universal muffler and have some custom piping done. I prefer the cat-back.
If you plan to put your car in shows they judges will like the cat-back better, unless you have a REALLY good muffler shop do it with good quality piping. Hope this helps. peace
