Hello
The transmission is under the hood on the right side as you face the front of the van.
Now...where the speed sensor is located is another thing. It's behind the engine on the top of the transmission (this is not in the line of sight). If you follow the speedo cable it will take you right to it (that is if 96 still uses a cable verses the all electrical). The best way to get to it is to drop the cross over pipe.
