Please don't use the forums to discuss how to obtain a car illegally. Use PM's if you want to.
I say go about this the legal way. You don't want to get busted down the road. Even though the guy was put in jail, and passed away. The car still belongs to someone, and that someone is not the shop, or you. You need to get the VIN and have the local PD run it. You don't need to walk in to do that, and shit, you could even call from a pay phone if you're worried. If they say it has not been reported stolen. You are good so far. But again, the shop still does not own that car. The guys next of kin does. So legally, they own the car, whether they know about it or not. I would then try to contact them. Just tell them the car has been abandoned. Hell, you could even tell them there is a large fee payable for storage. Chances are they would say. Well, if its a junker, with a big fee due, we don't want it. Then get them to sign something, even get it notarized, handing the car over to you (or the shop). If that turns up empty, and there is no next of kin to be found. To my knowledge, all states have a few forms you need to fill out to obtain ownership of an abandoned vehicles. I know Utah does. A friend of mine had to do this to obtain an old motorcycle that was left when his renters moved out. But not having a title is not that big of a deal, as long as it is all legit.
Overall. Do this the legal way. I for one, I couldn't drive a car knowing it was not obtained truthfully.
