Manually shifting an auto tranny is a bad thing. You probably messed up the tranny by doing that. The tranny is reliable if you take care of it, meaning checking fluids, keeping the bands adjusted, and making sure you are adding the correct fluid, which should only be Mopar ATF+3 or 4.
You can buy a used neon tranny for around $300 or since you mentioned making it faster, I would suggest swapping in a manual transmission. All the parts can be bought for around $500. That will make you neon quicker to start off with.

woud i have to goto the junkyard to get it for 500 or is there somewere i can get it newer
