A lot of what you see were probably early sourced prototypes of the production bits. Some things were obviously still in the 'yet to be determined' phase, or at least had not reached final sign off.

BTW: I just figured out where I got the idea the Clinic Model had been painted blue. Inside the AutoCar "McLaren's Road Car" book it mentions the car as the 'Studio Model' and says "Originally finished in bright silver ("Magnesium"), it's since been painted red, blue and is currently yellow." The book came bundled with the March 2nd, 1994 issue of AutoCar.
