Do you have keyless or something like that? I owned a 2000 civic, and i just swapped out the old head unit, and everything worked fine. I had a DX though, so if you have a higher model, you might have a feature that needs it.
You can always try to use one of the adapter harnesses, and just remove the old radio and see what happens. Then you're only out time if it doesn't work.
