It sounds like it's time to replace the starter. It sounds like the solenoid
may be sticking allowing the starter to stay engaged after you release the key. It also could be a be other items.

How many miles on this car? If it's been used for short trips the starter has had a lot of starts. If the car still starts you could take it to some place and have the starter tested. The will measure how many amps the starter is drawing. You could take it appart and clean it up....(I would get a manual and follow it). This is what I generally do. Although I've been working on my own cars since I've had one.
