Do you have a code? IE is the CEL illuminated?
I don't know what they test in your area but where I am there are three items:
NOX
CO
HC
NOX - is due to high combustion temperatures which is normally EGR related.
CO - is normally catalytic related
HC- is usually due to air/fuel ratios.
