I'm sure you have checked to make sure the reservoir is full. I was getting a low speed knocking sound in my steering (93). Found out last weekend that both ball joints were bad (at 262,000 miles). They were pretty easy to replace. There are no parts to grease on the Escort. On my car the power steering pump has always been louder than the engine.
