The debate is still up in the air over EGR blockoffs. Both sides have valid points, but after reading TONS on teh subject I'm planning on doing it in the future as well. You wont gain power, you wont overheat, but you will keep some carbon out of your engine and intake, and clean out some space behind the plenum. Those 2 facts alone justify it for me.
As far as the bolts, I don't even remember what I used last time I took off my plenum...but I think it was just a combination of socket extensions...because I really didn't have many tools with me at the time. Heat it up and just keep trying, also make sure you are using a 6 sided socket, not a 12 that will just strip the bolt futher. If you do strip it, you will need to get sockets designed for stripped bolts.
