5" autometer tach set up on '92 ranger

Hey every one. I just signed up and it looks like you could be just the group I've been looking for. I have a 1992 ford ranger with a 4.0 V-6 and I was given an Autometer Tachometer by a friend. I went on line to find how to wire the tach but it is still showing an inacurate reading (i.e. RPM is off by 500 - 1000 rpms at idle, and very slugish responce). I have gone on the sight for autometer and made sure that i had the right wire to splice into on the coil pack but still there is not a working tach in my truck.
Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks in advance.
