if you mean the speedo gear in the tranny then its pretty easy to pull out. its like 3 bolts on it, and then just pull hard and it will come out. you may want to remove your battery and battery tray first and maybe a few other things if they are in the way. should be rather easy.
i dont think it should be terminal either unless the gear is chewing itself up and letting metal shavings get into the trans.
