Speedo Drive Popping

Ok, so i get in my car yesterday and start driving, everythings fine (probably just drowned out by the radio). I look down at my speedo and its just popping up and down from 0-5 every few seconds. This does not give me warm and fuzzy feelings, I turn down the radio to hear the very noticeable sound (closely descrived as a baseball card in a bicycle wheel). I slow down and it becomes more distinct as a popping sound. I open the hood at home and pull the speedo cable, push the car and hear a very loud popping coming from the drive for the cable, I can see down into the hole and it appears to be turning about 1/8th of a turn and then snapping back in place with a sickeningly loud pop. My question is, do you think it is terminal and also, how do I remove this thing. I have checked my manual to no avail and also have search for hours already on the net. I know it is this drive assy. Instructions for removal would be very appreciated.

*EDIT*
I neglected to mention that the vehicle is a 91 crx with a b16 swap and a 93' YS1 teg transmission (the one with the power steering nipples on the drive)
