Use a test light or a multimater and see if there is any power going to the starter when you crank the key. If no check safety switch. If yes replace the starter/solenoid. Sticky solenoid or worn out starter motor brushes can act the same way. Sometimes tapping the starter with a hammer will get the starter working again for a few cranks.

The two times I have been able to start it, it started great. But that was after many futile attempts like I mentioned above. And no apparent reason as to why that particular turn of the key worked.
I suspect it to be something like a safety switch. Maybe it doesn't think it's in park, or that the brake is pushed in.
Does anyone have any ideas ? Or any suggestions as to how to trouble shoot it ?
