Re: custom turbo setup
I hope tex will reply to this too so he can confirm what I write, but I am pretty sure that (for instance) the turbo on the SRT4 is a reverse-rotation mitsubishi and that the front of it is plumbed directly off of the exhaust manifold (confirmation, tex? lol).
Anyway that's an example of the placement... going off the end of the exhaust manifold is a relatively ideal spot to mount a turbo. It does create some heat, but that's what an intercooler is for on your intake. Do not go off the end of the down-pipe... especially the stock down-pipe... this is way too far away from your engine. You will get too much turbo lag (going up and coming down) -- it would be much harder to time the boost and blow-off. You would also get slightly less boost as well because of the lag and slower velocity of the exhaust gases... So mount the turbo between your exhaust manifold and the downpipe.
And yes, the "up-pipe," and I use that term loosely, would be part of the intake-side of the turbo that plumbs fresh air back to your intercooler, intake manifold, etc. Hope this helps.
