From what I've learned the Twin Cams are the best way to go if you were heading down the NA route. Mainly because there are quite a few awesome upgrades you can pick up at a junkyard from a HO or a W41 Quad4. Also, the GM Supercharger is beastly for that car, especially when it has accompanying mods for breathing.
The Ecotec is just plain all-around solid, but takes to boost like a son of a bitch. A turbo ecotec is a beast that few 4-bangers can keep pace with.
The OHV is a great configuration for any non-inline motor. I mean, hell, everything from the Vette to the Viper has mastered the pushrod, but it's just not as useful for an inline motor. They do, however, have very VERY solid pickup in the low RPMs. My old 3.1 launched like a BEAST, but in the higher RPMs it dogged down. Ah..the joy that was 185 lb/tq from the factory.
