He's your superior. He's probably already been where you were and has moved up. A manager's responsiblity is to do just that, manage. He might not be doing work that your doing, but I guarantee he's doing work you don't see him doing.
My friend is a superintendant of construction. He's paid a lot more money than the people that shovel and pour concrete. He occasionally helps out with that sort of work, but only because he doesn't want to be the biggest dickhead of a boss. Bust most of the time, he's measuring, ordering, and making sure all is well on the job site.
He chose to bust his ass in college so he can do what he's doing. The others didn't.
Therefore you see the importance of either knowing people or getting an education.
