if your timing belt slipped or broke, you would most likely know it lol. our engines are interference engines so the valves would smash into the top of the pistons and make a loud noise and the car would just die. A timing belt doesnt USUALLY snap in half, the teeth on it usually get worn and break off causing the belt to slip and mess everything up. what your describing sounds like a possible t-belt but hopefully not!
