If you know how to open an alt, replace the diode board and put everything back together without losing the brushes, I would say that is the cheapest way...A local alternator shop should have the parts. But to me even though I know how to do it, it's simply easier replacing it with a new alt w/ a lifetime warranty...That's just me though.
