I believe that the fuel pump runs when the key is in the "ON" position. Probably not the best thing. (But maybe your car is smart and shuts it off if the engine isn't running; I'm not sure.)

In classic cars, it can be really bad because of the breaker-based ignition system. If the distributor is happened to have stopped in the 'wrong' position, the coil will burn up in seconds. Modern transistorized igniton systems don't have this problem.
