Figured it out myself.
Never could find anything on the Net specific to this problem. I do remember problems trying to start it after it had been sitting for over 9 months.
The bottom line was that the security system had shut it down electronically. All I had to do was to lock and unlock the driver side door key (the remote key fob was lost a long time ago).
The first indication of impending success was that when I turned the key in the door lock, the security system chirped. It started running as soon as the key was turned in the ignition.
