as to your question, laptops don't really work well (if at all) with datalogging programs, unless your laptop has a serial port, then it might work. you'll most likely have to get a palm pilot or equivalent. off e-bay they are really cheap, about 10-30 bucks. then you need a serial port adapter cable (about $5).
the software that works is MMCd datalogger. a list of compatible components (palm pilots, etc) can be found here:

however, the above page does not have the complete datalogging software: there's no executable file (.prc file) in the download. go to this page:
http://www.ecimulti.org/mmcd/, and download the 'MMCd Source 1.71.01132005' file. this one has the executable .prc file.
