wtf are you guys serious.... Mos def is good though, damn good. The neptunes make some sweet beats too. dead prez is another damn good "lyrical" style. You guys need to hear the underground....not the fucking money making trl style shit.....mike jones, paul wall(which is a respectable business person too), slim thug are good(although i would say mike jones is my least favorite, but he has his songs). You have to know where there coming from to respect them more i guess. Sure sure he says "who is mike jones" 100 thousand times a song, but listen to his reasoning.....its the damn truth, and notice how EVERYONE knows who he is now, because he's known as the "who is mike jones" person. IT GETS HIS NAME OUT THERE. The funny thing is you guys probably have just now heard of them.....unless you live down south(which dominates rap by faaaaar now).
kind of like twista....he all the sudden became super mainstream, compare his old shit to his last "mainstream" album and notice the difference. His new album comes out october 4 if anyone cares lol. The old shit > his new, why you ask? Because its not all fairied out for mtv and BET to play.
what rap used to be huh.....get any GOOD rap from the 80's. Geto boys, too short, 2live crew, bdp, NWA, mc eight,spice one etc etc etc etc. Jeezus rap is still the same, beats may have changed a bit but the basic "hardcore" styling is still there. You guys are into that run dmc/grand master flash stuff still huh. Dont get me wrong i own all the run dmc cd's....but sheesh.
listen to hypnotized minds if you want some nice underground(3-6 mafia's old old old stuff). Most people think "when the smoke clears" when they hear 3-6 mafia mentioned which is damn funny, because thats there only platinum album out of like a gazillion. Hypnotized minds is an acquired taste and are very respected throughout the community.
Most the respectable rappers barely go platinum....but then you do have the ones that do repeatedly, 2pac, biggie, jay-z(sadly). Master P and the no limit soldiers i give most credit. He bought his fucking projects lol!!!!! They came up from shit. c-murder has life in prison for murder. They werent "studio" thugs like dre and and all them.
UGK for instance (bun b and pimp c) been around waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay long time, but i bet most people are just now hearing about them because of swisha house(which has been around for ages too).
not trying to preach or anything, but iv been listening to "rap" since aslong as i can remember. TOO $hort is what i first remember. I think i was about 5 on my way to kindergarden with my dad beating out his 2 12" orion subs in his pearl orange s10 lowrider bwhahhahhahahahahahahahahahaahah. Those were back in the tape player days.
