Chicks dig guys like that.

Been to them all... had fun. Just don't blow it out of proportion... realize that it's just a high-school dance, not the be-all-end-all event of the century. Relax and have fun.

As far as asking girls to them, I usually just figured out who I wanted to ask (without going way out of my league), and usually started a conversation with them about something else, then I'd just ask them if they already had plans, if the answer was no, then I'd ask them. That way, they have the option of saying "Yes, me and _______ are going to the dance", rather than you asking them and them burning you down with a "no". And you can always pretend you were just asking for the sake of conversation "Oh really? that's cool, _______ is a good guy! Where are you guys going for dinner, etc..."

If they say they don't have plans yet, then ask them point blank. Worst case is they'll say no... Go on to the next candidate. Learning how to take rejection without wanting to die is part of the game.

So, no, it doesn't work every time, but if you don't challenge yourself, you'll never get better at it.
