You can't say that one is more reliable than the other. There are SOHC engines that have 4 valves per cylinder. You're better off with DOHC for performance in my opinion. It is simple, airflow equals power and DOHC engines have more airflow. Ah, but I just said that there are SOHC engines with 4 valves per cylinder, why not just get one of those?

Two words, valve overlap. Want to tune your engine? You can tune the valve overlap much better and easier in a DOHC engine.

If you're concerned about reliability there are other things you need to be looking at.
