Not sure if the '01 is like my '99, but if it is you need to take off the accessory belts, then the side engine cover to get to the timing belt. If you're standing in front of the engine with the hood open, it's on the left side (at least on mine it is). If you need more help let me know. My repair manual covers through '01.

Also--$600 is crazy to replace a timing belt. I got mine done for around $200. You might want to check with other auto shops to get prices.
