you should be able to watch coolant trickle out of the petcock at the thermostat if the reservoir is full. sounds like you have a nasty airbubble in there. i have worked on 900's for a long time and have never had a bubble in one. you probably have a blown headgasket, which is pushing exhaust in the cooling system. do you have access to a block tester? it is a device you put in the opening of the reservoir, you put a chemical in the device and it will turn colors if it detects exhaust gasses in your coolant. this will prove it for you. i assume you have a bunch of dried coolant around the turbo flange. that is also a good indicator of headgasket problems.
