The tires on mine are 10.5" on a 20" wheel. I would suggest going to a tire place (tirebarn, discount tire, ect...) and see what the largest width you can put on a 16" wheel. There are a couple fellows on here more knowledgable than me in this subject, so they might have a direct answer for you. There are web calcultors for tires, but am unsure if they will calculate your particular need.
In the end, you may want to consider going with a 18" or 20" wheel. Their price is very reasonable compared to 3-4 yrs ago. My set was $230each. Tires were another $200each mounted, balanced and warrantied.
