I think the best I4 from japan for high hp applications is the mitsu 2 liter turbo in the eclipse, and lancer evo. I mean you get like 270+ hp in stock form in the Evos.

The Tom's GT-500 Toyota Supra, driven by Wayne Gardner in the JGTC is powered by a 3S-GTE. It makes 470hp at 6000rpm and 469 ft/lbs of torque at 4500 rpm. If you don't believe me, just go to:

The 4G63 (Lancer Evo motor), is also a very good motor for high hp applications, but is not any better than the 3S-GTE or SR20-DET and possibly the EJ20 (WRX engine). Don't think that the 4G63 is better simply because of the Lancer Evo's, the Lancer Evo is based on a rally car, which competes with the likes of the Toyota Corolla (3S-GTE powered), so they are actually quite equal.
