Did he put coolant into the radiator along with the water? This mechanic is starting to sound pretty stupid! Check to make sure your fans are coming on...Start the engine and let it sit there, after a couple of minutes they should kick on. If they don't check to make sure your relay is good. If it is leaking, you should be able to see it somewhere. Squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses, be careful maybe hot, and see if coolant comes out anywhere.
