timing

I actually just had to replace a head seal and i took everything apart and i bought new valves and springs. After putting everything back together we did the timing how the book told us to....on my 1997 325i....i started the car up and it ran pretty badly. does the my car even have vanos?... if so do you have to get it adjusted by computer at the dealer?
