You should never take the plugs out and put them back in when the engine is hot. You could ruin the grooves that they screw into. Trust me, it is much more worth taking the extra half hour to let the beast cool down than to do it when its hot. The other thing is did you screw them down with enough pressure? I'm pretty sure that 25 ft/lbs is about right. Use a torque wrench when screwing them back in to make sure.

Not sure about the fuel pump. I don't have any experience with that. Good luck getting it running properly again.
