If the transmission went out completely it is very doubtful that it had anything to do with the replacement of the axle shaft. What exactly did the transmission do when it went out? It is possible that the seal on the axle shaft allowed all the fluid to come out of the transmission and that is why it is not working but you would have seen that very easily.
