Thermostats are cheap - they can be bad when they are new right out of the box. Just becaouse something is new, don't rule it out as potentially being bad. If you want to verify that is the cause, when you take it out put it in a pan of water on the stove. Turn the stove on and use a meat thermometer to monitor the water temp and watch the thermostat. If it is a 195 it will probably start to crack open at 180 and be fully open at 200. If the water boils and it isn't open it is bad. BTW, you didn't put it in upside down, did you? Does the car have bleed nipples on the motor somewhere. The newer ones do as the motor is higher than the radiator. If it has them, did you bleed the air thru them? On my 2001, there was no way to get the engine full thru the radiator cap without bleeding. As far as blockage goes, your radiator could be full of gunk. The car is 12 years old.
