The safe and sound service which is door lockout, flat tire, out of gas, remote diagnostics, air bag deployment, emergency services and gps locating is only 16 bucks per month. I upgraded my package and went with directions and connections + safe and sound and love it to death, will not have another GM without onstar.
Another way to go is outside of a car alarm with hood pins and starter disable is as follows, when I bought my silverado it came installed from the dealer with a starter disable. The company that makes the disabler guarentees that if your vehicle is stolen and not found within I think 30 days they will buy you a new vehicle. Now there is probably some fine print that gets them out of it, but it worked really well if you didnt mind another key fob on you keys.
