As far as a deterioration in performance........that is a tough one because my wife usually drives it and she isn't as "in tune" with what is/should be happening as I might be.
I looked at the fuses and everything looked ok........I will check again - as well as start thumbing through a manual.

With the car shutting off like that it could be a bad ground or computer , but most likely it was the cam sensor that went. If that happens the car basically just shuts off and when you try to start it nothing happens just cliclking relays and sometime the gauges will spike all over
