When should timing chain be replaced?
Car perfectly maintained and not raced.
As Jason said, this ain't no POS Honduh.

I've examined a number of high mileage SR20 chains and am fully comfortable that the chain should not need replacement. Even the chain on the engine that came with my G was in great shape and that engine was the worst SR20 I've ever seen. More than one bearing was paper thin and the entire engine was so coked inside it looked like the La Brea tar pits. I'm not joking either.

The only chain I've heard of breaking on an SR20 was one with about 30k miles. The engine was replaced under warranty. Obviously the chain was defective.

The chain will last the life of the engine because, well, when the chain goes, the life of the engine is over. Cheaper to replace with a JDM engine. Expect to pay on the order of $500 to replace the chain in the car.
