This sounds like it could possibly be a crankshaft position sensor. Maybe. When it dies, can you try and restart it? Does it turn over, that is? If so, and it doesn't fire, check for spark. If no spark, then it could be a CPS. It's possible that when changing the water pump, you got something on the sensor (since it's basically directly below it).
